Situated to the west of the Tagus estuary, the territory occupied by the municipality of Cascais is bordered to the north by the municipality of Sintra, to the south by the ocean and the west by the municipality of Oeiras. Cascais lies at a distance of roughly 30km from Lisbon and is linked to the capital by road and rail routes. The road link can be made on public transport or by private vehicle. Possible routes are the EN 6 (National Road or Marginal) and the A5 highway. The rail link is maintained by the Lisbon-Cascais line, which takes a route parallel to that of the EN 6 and which links “Cais do Sodré” station, in Lisbon, to “Cascais” station, found in the historic centre of Cascais. Whether you use the rail link or the EN 6 road link to travel between Lisbon and Cascais, you will always be guaranteed a journey of rare beauty during which you can appreciate the maritime landscape, several monuments and the lively beaches. Located to the west of the Tejo estuary, the district of Cascais is surrounded in the North by the district of Sintra, the South and the West by the ocean and the East by the district of Oeiras. Cascais is known for being a welcoming town and the standards for tourist and cultural activities are extremely high to give visitors the kind of quality service they expect. The modern and cosmopolitan town of Cascais, has old traditions connected to the sea. The fishing community has a special procession which takes place in August during the “Festas do Mar” celebrations to give thanks to Our Lady of the Sailors for watching over and protecting them during the year. During the summer, there is an arts and craft fair in Estoril. With around 15 km of beaches and a mild climate, this area is an ideal location for water sports and spending time by the sea. There are beaches to the west of the region, one of which is "Praia do Guincho" and is well known for its strong westerly winds and the annual windsurfing event which takes place as part of the world windsurfing championship tour. Due to a fact that a third of this region is located in the Sintra-Cascais National Park, tourists have a chance to explore the coast and see the richness of its landscape, visiting places such as “Boca do Inferno”, and “Cabo Raso”, and the previously mentioned “Guincho”, “Serra de Sintra” and “Cabo da Roca”. The proximity of the sea and mountains, together with the climate, mean a wide variety of sports and outdoor activities such as golf, tennis, horse riding, mountain biking and hiking are on offer. In addition, it is an excellent place for water sports such as sailing, windsurfing and surfing. Cascais is the perfect place for a fun night out. The wide range of discos, bars and outdoor areas, many of these on the sea front, create a relaxed atmosphere. It is worth mentioning here the Estoril Casino (the largest in Europe), as it has a wide variety of high quality entertainment and leisure activities.
