Portsalon Golf Club, established in 1891 by Colonel B.J. Barton, holds a significant place in golfing history. Colonel Barton's vision led to the establishment of the Portsalon hotel and golf links, and he played a key role in making Portsalon one of the founding members of the Golfing Union of Ireland, the oldest golf union globally. The course itself was designed by Charles Thompson, a professional from Portrush, and quickly gained recognition as one of the premier links courses, attracting golfers from both local and distant locations.
